Those Tricolor Mexican Football Shirts Are like Gold (Cups)!
The national Mexican football team is not only part of the CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football), it’s also the most successful team!
It has won 12 confederation titles - 9 gold cups and 3 championships (precursor to the Gold Cup).
Adidas has been designing the national Mexico football shirts since 2007, and each year these international football shirts keep getting better and better!
To represent the country’s flag colours, the Mexican football kit is most typically made up of:
- Green shirts
- White shorts
- Red socks
Usually, the shirts have abstract geometric shapes or designs - just like the World Cup 1998 retro shirt.
Talk about an instant classic!
However, in 2015, Adidas released an all-black Mexican football kit. It was the first time in the club’s history that the team had swayed from the traditional tricolour palette.
It still had the tricolour banding on the bottom of the shirt but boy is it one we will never forget!
2026 will mark forty years since Mexico hosted the World Cup for the second time (the first in 1970), making this the third time that they host! This time they’ll be doing the honours alongside Canada and the USA.
Will we see a resurgence of the all-black kit? Only time will tell…

Liga MX has been the first division of the Mexican football league since 2012 - it was previously known as Primera División de México.
The Liga MX is split into two seasons!
The first season, known as Apertura (Spanish for ‘opening’), takes place from July to December. Clausura, meaning ‘closing’ in Spanish, is the second season that runs from January to May.
Each season has its own champion, so, technically, there are two champions each year for Liga MX!
Usually Liga MX works similarly to the Premier League in that clubs are promoted and relegated depending on performance - however, since 2020, this has been suspended until 2026.
Why? Well, the second division - Ascenso MX - folded due to financial reasons, as well as the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.
So, with No Relegations or Promotions, Who’s Liga Mx’s Best Club?
That would be It Club América who’ve won 14 titles!
The league is made up of 14 clubs, including:
- Guadalajara
- Toluca
- Cruz Azul
