How to Frame a Football Shirt In 5 Simple Steps

Wondering how to frame a football shirt

You’re not the first - and certainly won’t be the last - person to ask this question!

In this blog, our team of footy experts will share 5 simple steps as to how to put a football shirt in a frame so you can enjoy it for years to come.

How To Frame a Football Shirt: 5 Easy Steps

It could be a retro shirt that evokes memories, a shirt your child wore in their winning match, or a rare shirt from a mystery box, framing a football shirt is a great memento.

1. Find A Frame

If you’re wondering how to put a football shirt in a frame you’ve got to start with, well, a frame!

Take some measurements to ensure your frame is big enough for your top.

Top tip: Make sure you leave enough space between the shirt and the edge of the frame!

You also should consider what colours you want to opt for - for example, if you’re framing a Manchester United shirt, you can’t choose a blue frame or background. As well as considering the aesthetics of the room you want to hang your framed football top.

2. Steam Your Shirt

Each to their own, but personally, we don’t want to see a jersey with mud, pie, or even beer stains down the front framed in our homes!

Therefore, it’s a good idea to wash your football shirt and iron or steam it to make sure there are no creases or obvious stains.

3. Stretch Onto a Mountboard

If this is your first time framing a football top, you may not even know what a mountboard is!

Simply put, it’s a rigid board that supports art or other framed items. Sometimes referred to as a backboard, they’re really easy to use.

All you have to do is stretch your shirt over your mountboard. There are typical two methods:

  • Pop the board inside your shirt to
  • Wrap the top around it

No matter which you choose, it will add some structure and support to your shirt to ensure it looks the best it can be.

4. Mask It Up

Now you have your shirt prepped, it’s time to fasten it in place.

Masking tape is a great way to keep your shirt in position without damaging the fabric in any way.

Simply pop the tape on the back of the mountboard and you’re good to go! We recommend pulling the shirt tightly when fixing it into place to create a crisp, clean finish that clearly shows off the badge or football number if you want to show off the back.

Don’t worry if this takes a few tries to get just how you want it. It’s always better to take your time and spend a few minutes perfecting it so you don’t have to take the frame off your wall and start again!

Top tip: If masking tape isn’t strong enough to hold your shirt up, you can always use pins instead!

5. Pop the Back On

Once your shirt is mounted, you’re almost finished!

You now need to attach the mountboard to your frame - your frame should have some twist ties to prevent any extreme gapping. (And let it fit back into the frame!)

Depending on the frame you opt for, there may also be some space to add some photos of the player or team.

When everything is just as you would like it, simply return the back to the frame and close it up.

And that’s it! Now you know how to frame a football shirt.
